The Illustrated Wok by The Cleaver Quarterly

The Cleaver Quarterly highlights Chinese regional cuisines and how they travel across the world. For their ambitious cookbook, The Illustrated Wok, I was selected to illustrate a recipe for Crispy Peking Duck Leg. The illustration for this recipe—a Chinese classic via Virginia—was designed to read like a patchwork quilt.

A process of iteration.

A process of iteration.

Over the course of several weeks, I worked closely with the editor of The Cleaver Quarterly to hone the layout and design of the piece. The result would be entirely hand-illustrated, and we were communicating across continents — so it felt extra-important to ensure that we were both on the same page before progressing with work.
